The 11th International Meeting on Human Genome Variation and Complex Genome Analysis held in Tallinn
14.09.2009

Author:
The international research conference which focused on analysing human genome variation was held in Tallinn for the first time and attracted renowned gene researchers from all over the world. The organisation of such a high profile conference in Tallinn is recognition of Estonian research and researchers and confirms that Estonia is a human genome research centre to be reckoned with at the world level.

The eleventh international gene researchers conference Human Genome Variation and Complex Genome Analysis (HGV2009) was opened in Tallinn in the Viru Hotel on Friday, September 11. The conference lasted three days and brought to Estonia top researchers from nearly twenty states, incl. the US, Great Britain, Canada and the Netherlands. The conference took place for the eleventh time – last year it was held in Toronto.

The organisation of such a high profile conference in Tallinn is recognition of Estonian research and researchers and confirms that Estonia is a human genome research centre to be reckoned with at the world level.

The presentations of the conference focused on human genome research of one molecule (Han Cao, US) as well as a population, for instance, results obtained upon sequencing the genomes of 1,000 people (Michael Eberle, US). In addition, the genetic testing experience in practical health care upon diagnosing ordinary diseases (Jean-Jacques Cassiman, Belgium), complete analysis of the genome of people suffering from cancer (Elaine Mardis, US) as well as assessment of the effectiveness of medicinal products (Allen Roses, US) was discussed.

Andres Metspalu from the University of Tartu spoke of the Estonian Genome Project and the genetic structure of Europeans.
